For over 10 years, Fashion Revolution has been campaigning passionately for a clean, safe, fair, transparent and accountable fashion industry. The largest fashion activism movement believes in a global fashion industry that conserves and restores the environment and values people over growth and profit. A cause close to our heart and the centre of everything that we do here at Crafts by Solid.
On the 24th of April 2013, a textile factory in Bangladesh collapsed. The Rana Plaza building housed a number of garment factories, employing around 5,000 people. The people in this building were manufacturing clothing for many of the biggest global fashion brands. The building collapsed and killed 1134 people and injured more than 2500 others, making it the fourth largest industrial disaster in history. The victims were mostly young women. During Fashion Revolution Week, we remember the lives lost and demand that no one should die for fashion.
One of the biggest and most powerful industries in the world, how can we beat such a system? As individuals and consumers, we can choose very consciously where we spend our money, which brands deserve our trust and in the kind of system we want to support. ‘Voting with your wallet’, that’s what it’s called.
As a label, choosing the right partner for your production is incredibly challenging. With factories far away from home, it’s difficult to get a true sense of what’s going on over there. Finding a partnership that stands for transparency and an open communication is the very first step.
